Research Facilities Available to MD/PhD Students
The School of Medicine has 420,000 square feet of research space, including 64,000 square feet in the Health Sciences Facility (HSF) and an additional 65,000 square feet in HSF-II, which opened in 2002. The Baltimore VA Medical Center, the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center (MPRC) and the Maryland Biotechnology Institute - which includes the Institute of Human Virology - also provide rich research opportunities on campus for our students.
Research is supported by the Health Sciences Library, a state-of-the-art regional medical library. At present, School of Medicine trainees number 150 postdoctoral fellows and 233 PhD students.
The School of Medicine has continued to strengthen its research activities, resulting in an increase in funded research by 270% over the past decade. In 2005, the School had $349.5 million in sponsored research. MD/PhD students are expected to write fellowship applications to NIH or other funding agencies. We have a high success rate of achieving these awards. F30 (Individual Predoctoral AwardsFor M.D./PH.D. Fellowships) and F31 (Individual Predoctoral Fellowship Minority Students) grants are generally submitted in the first year of your PhD training.
According to the latest available Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) reports, the School of Medicine ranked in the top 10 among the 75 public medical schools and the top 20 among all 125 U.S. medical schools in total research funding.
